A Note to Harlan at 10 Weeks

Friday, March 10, 2015

Dear Harlan,

Harlan tomorrow you will be 10 weeks old – and I can’t believe that time has stood still and yet gone so quickly.  Today you stayed with Aunt Jodie and Grandma while I went to a Doctor appointment. I call your Aunt Jodie the Baby Whisperer because in a matter of moments you are asleep and snug on her shoulder. She greets you each time with “Good Morning” and you smile and smile. Tonight I need to be packing, preparing for my first trip on the airplane with you as we head to Kentucky – but you went to sleep early and I want to capture some moments that have been your first 2 months of life.

Last Friday Dad and I took you to the pediatrician – Dr. Drake. You were the best baby – looking around and smiling. Even when they gave you your vaccinations – you cried hard, but as soon as I picked you up – you stopped – knowing it was over. We already know you are a courageous little boy with all that you have survived, and I imagine that you have a high pain tolerance too .

You like the India Blanket as much as we do.
You love to sleep on your side.
You are growing – you are 11 pounds 10 ounces and have grown to 22 inches . Your head is 15.5 circumference and you are in the 50th percentile for weight. The next time you go you will be 4 months old – it will be fun to see all that you are doing then.

When you cry – which is not often – you get the most heartbreaking pucker to your lips. Dad would argue that I don’t like any of your cries – but I can handle them if I know you are tired and just fighting sleep. It hurts me when I know you are crying because you are hungry or startled. It hurts me more when I see that sad little lip .
Two Months Old February 27, 2015

The past two weeks you have started talking to yourself and it is the sweetest little voice. You talk to me, to yourself and then you smile. I love that you are a serious baby – always reflective. However, you smile and laugh,
 when it is worth it.
